Something Different – Writing Prompts

I was going through my creative writing binder this evening and I found some handwritten writings that I made several years ago.

I remember that I had found this website, which I thought did not exist any more but realized the links had changed. I signed up with them again this evening and downloaded their year of writing prompts.

At that time, in 2016, they had this month long writing bootcamp. It was a different writing prompt each day. I signed up but only made it to Day 3. I think I did not continue because I was hand writing everything. In my mind I thought it would make me a better writer. It just became too overwhelming. This was at the beginning of my transition from personal journal writing to this blog.

I moved on, found Instagram, and some writing accounts instead. I also got a laptop for the first time and converted over to that for writing. I was using a trusty desktop which I still do most of my writing on.

I decided to type the writing prompts up and post them here under the writing challenge category. Just doing something a little different today.

This was the first prompt and subject.

Day 1 – Breaking up with writer’s block.

“It is time for you and writer’s block to part ways.  Write a letter breaking up with Writer’s Block, starting out with “Dear Writer’s Block, It’s not you, It’s me…”

Dear Writer’s Block,

It’s not you, it’s me and I want you to know we had our moments through the years.

All those times when words escaped me or the meanings behind the words were not fully realized. The potential was lost but not forgotten.

The hurried little notes on random pieces of paper that were quickly lost and forgotten. Only to be found later but the reasoning of the message was long gone.

The brief moments of brilliance. Those thought provoking questions and ideas that were shared through letters, reports, or journal entries, only to be carelessly thrown away to make room for less than mediocre rantings and ravings.

These are the things that have defined our relationship.  So now it is time for us to say our goodbyes.

I realized that my capacity for more meaningful prose has been overshadowed for too long.

The yearning to write more thoughtful and positive work whether to be seen by others or just solely for myself has been becoming more and more urgent, necessitating a change.

The desire to seek out more interesting subjects to write about has been a constant on my mind.

The ability to write whether creatively or with serious thought needs the opportunity to become stronger and to grow beyond the current limitations.

So dear Writer’s Block, it’s not you, it’s me.

We had moments that will soon be forgotten.

You are like a bad penny and I am sure you will turn up sooner or later.

Next time I will leave you where you are and not pick you up again.

Sincerely yours,

Wandering writer

  1. Your post struck a chord with me, especially the part about breaking up with Writer’s Block. It’s a struggle that many writers, including myself, can relate to. The journey from handwritten notes to digital writing is a significant transition, and it’s inspiring to see how you’ve adapted and grown through the process. The idea of revisiting old prompts and giving them new life on your blog is a wonderful initiative. It not only showcases your writing journey but also serves as a source of inspiration for others who might be facing similar challenges. Your letter to Writer’s Block is beautifully written. It captures the bittersweet relationship between a writer and those moments when inspiration seems to slip away. Your determination to leave it behind and focus on more meaningful and interesting subjects is commendable. Keep writing and sharing your journey. It’s posts like these that create a sense of community among writers. Looking forward to reading more of your work! – Claire from Philippines
