thousand words or less

Overreaction, irritability, and snarkiness, oh my!

Daily writing prompt
How do you know when it’s time to unplug? What do you do to make it happen?

How do you know when it is time to unplug? What do you do to make it happen?

That is a good question and prompt for the day.

Personally, when the anxiety I have has become too overwhelming, that is when I know it is time to step back and assess the situation at hand.

I may be overreacting, become irritable, or my words may become sharp or rather snarky when the anxiety has become too high.

I have to take stock and ask some simple questions: Is it interactions with others that are causing the anxiety? Did I eat enough today or drink enough water? Did I sleep too much or too little? Have I spent too much time watching television or scrolling through social media?

If any of these are a yes and sometimes, all the boxes are checked off, then I take a step back.

I will take time to write on subjects for this blog, which is my first go-to response for quelling the chaotic thoughts.

The second action to take is to meditate and quiet the thoughts way down. Sitting in silence and focusing on my breath not only calms my thoughts but also helps with headaches or high blood pressure that happens on occasion. I will go for a walk if my arthritic knees and foot are cooperating and if the mood is right.

I often turn to music as a way of quieting my mind. Soft music like classical or instrumentals with violin, guitar, or piano as my top choices.

There is also doing something creative that keeps my hands busy. Busy hands and an active mind can bring things into perspective.

Drawing, painting, beadwork, or even playing a video game can help. I try to only play video games when I am in the mood because it can become a time waster. I have started games before and the next thing I knew I have been sitting there for 5 hours already.

If all else fails, a short nap of about 25 minutes usually works wonders. I have found setting an alarm and sticking to this length of time keeps me from feeling groggy and helps me become more alert. It is a fine line between too much and just enough sleep for me. Too much sleep and the anxiety starts all over again because I become tired.

It is always a good thing to unplug from the rest of the world in your safe space. The world and life itself contain so many struggles as it is, your peace of mind is important to surviving it all.

Thank you so much for stopping by.

Have a wonderful week!

Peace, love, happiness, and good vibes, always!
