This is a good prompt to get some ideas out and do a little writing.

I know most people would probably list out some basic pantry staples such as flour, sugar, and maybe spices. Others may list out their favorite foods, snacks, or even items to make their favorite dishes.

My top item has always been coffee and tea. I am from technically the center of the United States but we are sometimes considered “Southern”. We have tea and coffee at all hours of the day whether it is hot, cold, or iced.

I grew up with the smell of coffee wafting through the air at 4 am. That was always my favorite memory. The smell of coffee brewing as I could hear my grandparents talking and making breakfast.

Southern tea is typically served in tall glass over ice, “Sweet” or “Unsweet” with or without lemon. Then there are some instances where it is drank hot with either half and half creamer or in my case non-dairy creamer. I have added hot green tea or matcha as a substitute for coffee on some winter mornings.

My next grocery picks would be unbleached flour and baking powder. I grew up learning how to use this pantry staple in everything from gravies and sauces to baked goods. Eating biscuits and gravy for breakfast was almost a daily occurrence. As I got older, I learned how to use flour for a multitude of items from pancakes to waffles or creating a rue for many different sauces.

Then there are basic foods that sustained us most of our lives such as beans, potatoes, rice, and pasta. It was cheap and a good base for most dishes. Growing up where every penny counted these food items were substantial enough to feed many people if needed.

I grew up not having a lot but my grandparents always managed. They taught me the value of not only pinching pennies but finding solutions when times were tough.

They also showed me that basic simple meals could be just as satisfying if you have the right ingredients and the know how.

Thank you for stopping by and visiting my blog.

Have a happy holidays and an even happier new year!

Peace, love, happiness, and good vibes, always!
