The very first book I read by Stephen King was “The Talisman” with Peter Straub. I was somewhere between 13 to 14 years old.
I had a very rough childhood and reading was my escape from what I was going through. This story of a kid going on a journey to find a way to save his mother stuck with me for a very long time.
The vividness of the writing and the ability to envision everything was what got me hooked. I started reading everything that I could find from the author. I still continue to read his work when I can. I do not make much time for reading anymore and I really should do that again.
A more recent writing, I listened to on an audiobook by Stephen King, was “On Writing – A Memoir of the Craft”. I listened intently to how he started writing and it was very interesting. The part in the audio book that discussed his accident in 1999 struck a chord with me. I remember that day.
We had just come home from running errands and picking up my then husband from work. I was about 6 months pregnant with my youngest daughter. A habit was to turn on the news as soon as we walked in. I was the last one through the door when this news blip came across about his accident. It just stopped me right then and there. I stood there and listened. I started crying. My husband shuffled our kids off to their rooms and came back. He hugged me and said it would be okay.
My ex-husband knew about my childhood and I had talked to him about how those books written by Stephen King kept me going. They were my saving grace. My ex-husband would even occasionally buy me the newest books when they came out.
In the 17 years that we were married that is the one moment I remember the most out of all the fighting, arguing and the eventual end of the marriage. The kindness and care for what I was feeling in that moment because he knew it was important to who I was as a person. He stood there and consoled his overly emotional pregnant wife and just let me feel what I was feeling.
I did not have one favorite book growing up, I had a favorite author with his many stories.
Thank you for stopping by.
Have a great week!
Peace, love, happiness, and good vibes, always!
